SUPPLEMENTAL PLANS
Supplemental insurance is purchased to help you pay for any services or out of pocket expenses that your primary health insurance will not cover. Some of these plans will help you pay for the cost sharing that goes along with deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. In addition to this, it helps pay for medical services that your health plan will not cover at all.
Another great benefit to having a supplemental plan is that it provides you with a cash benefit that is paid out over a period of time or it can be given to you in one lump sum. This cash benefit can be used to:
- Cover any lost wages
- Transportation
- Food, medication, and any other unexpected expenses incurred due to injury or illness.
TYPES OF SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE
CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE
This type of insurance often provides a lump sum cash benefit that helps pay for any additional costs related to your illness but are not covered by your primary health insurance plan or disability coverage. This money can be used to pay for a variety of expenses that may include:
- Deductibles
- Out-of-network specialists
- Travel and lodging
- Experimental treatments
- Childcare
- Household assistance
- Car payments
- Utility bills
- Groceries
ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND SUPPLEMENTAL ACCIDENT PLANS
There are two kinds of accident policies available:
ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT INSURANCE (AD&D)
With this plan you are paid a lump sum cash benefit as long as you are named beneficiary of someone who died in an accident. If the person did not die but instead lost a limb, went blind or is permanently paralyzed, the amounts paid out are smaller.
ACCIDENT MEDICAL INSURANCE (ACCIDENT INDEMNITY POLICY OR SUPPLEMENTAL ACCIDENT POLICY)
This coverage pays for medical costs related to an accident or an injury. Often times these policies will cover extended home care services and even travel and lodging for any family members.
HOSPITAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE (HOSPITAL CONFINEMENT INSURANCE)
This coverage provides a cash benefit if you happen to find yourself confined to a hospital due to an illness or a serious injury.
